Michael Ndhlovu is a seasoned professional with extensive expertise in claims handling and management, loss adjusting, reinsurance, underwriting, risk surveying and engineering, property valuations, mining engineering, and startup development. His experience spans across bancassurance, Insurtech, and microinsurance products, showcasing his well-rounded knowledge in both the insurance and engineering industries.
Michael began his academic journey at The Copperbelt University, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering from 2008 to 2012. He furthered his education by obtaining a Diploma in Insurance from the Zambia College of Pensions & Insurance Trust between 2015 and 2017. Currently, he is pursuing a Diploma (Dip CILA) from the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA – UK) and is studying French at the Alliance Française de Lusaka, aiming to reach an A1 Beginner level.
Professionally, Michael has been serving as the Claims Manager and Head at Finsbury Reinsurance Limited since January 2024. In this role, he oversees proactive claim handling, ensuring thorough investigation, assessment, reserving, expense management, and settlement practices are maintained to the highest standards.
Prior to his current position, Michael was the Claims Manager at Klapton Reinsurance Zambia Limited from October 2022 to October 2023. There, he led the Claims Department, ensuring efficient and cost-effective claim processing. His responsibilities included providing expert input on procedures, handling complex claims, maintaining claims statistics, ensuring legal compliance, and coordinating training.
From January 2019 to September 2022, Michael served as the Acting Manager for Underwriting (Broker Markets) and Risk Engineer at Hollard Insurance Zambia Limited. His duties included preparing quotations, determining premiums, evaluating policies, conducting risk management surveys, advising on risks, generating risk survey reports, budgeting, premium reconciliation, and compiling business updates.
Michael’s earlier experience includes his role as Assistant Managing Consultant at Loss
Management Consultancy from September 2013 to December 2018. He conducted risk
management surveys, loss adjusting, recoveries, valuations, and marketed the company’s products, ensuring technical operations met turnaround standards and quality while formulating competitive strategies.
His career began with an internship as a Mining Engineer at Mopani Copper Mines – Mufulira Mine Site from January 2012 to April 2012. During this period, he worked on evaluating the effects of reclamation on the primary ventilation system, checking temperatures and dust levels, and monitoring air pressures in production areas.
Michael has also participated in various training programs and workshops, enhancing his skills in financial lines insurance underwriting, risk surveying, advanced fire and business interruption loss adjusting, trade credit insurance, and more. His certifications include being a Registered
Engineer (R. Eng) with the Engineering Registration Board of Zambia, a Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment and Prevention Strategies (FRAPS) from FPSA – South Africa, and memberships in several professional organizations such as the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and the International Federation of Adjusting Associations (IFAA).
In terms of technical knowledge, Michael is proficient in using DXC SICS Reinsurance Software, SSP Insurance Software, S4I Insurance Software, Data Warehouse, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
